A Birthday Cake to Remember

I have just returned home from an evening at 'the house' (as promised last week - easiest way to refer to it!)  While we were going to have a roast chicken, once we got home from Mexican food around 6:00, we were in no mood for another full meal.  We spent a quiet evening finishing the second season of Game of Thrones, complimented by a cake for my birthday.

Kylie and Candice have a bit of a reputation for making some incredible birthday cakes.  While there seem to have been some grand plans in place for mine this evening, the icing didn't quite work out, setting off a chain of events resulting in a cake, that while delicious, wasn't the most beautiful creation ever.  None-the-less, out of all the amazing cakes they have made thus far, this one will go on being remembered for a long time to come.
Cake attempt #1 - intended to be a dreidel.
The second attempt at cake making - supposedly representative of Uluru.
Anyways, we had a great night, and the chicken will be eaten at a late lunch tomorrow!

Back to this morning -

I left the house about 10:30 and walked to Darling Harbour to the National Maritime Museum via Ultimo.  Along the way I went through some really great laneways into inner-block spaces.  One big initiative of the City is to create vibrant laneways which cut through blocks, and I would say they have been quite successful in the venture!

The museum was interesting; they currently have a display about the Titanic, so that was pretty cool.  My favourite part was touring the naval ship moored outside as well as the submarine and replica of the HMS Endeavour, James Cook's ship which was the first to land in Sydney.

After the museum I headed north along the coast through many great parks along the old wharves, making my way across Pyrmont.  I walked for many kilometres up and down some of the cliffs, happily taking in the scenery and beautiful spring-like weather.

I continued along the coast all the way to the Anzac Bridge before turning south and heading into Glebe.  Along the walk I made a point of going through Wentworth Park and up through the heart of Glebe to get a few pictures of Glebe Town Hall (which I had visited early this week during work).  Only a few blocks from campus, it was still very surprising to turn a corner and be faced with the University across Parramatta Road.  While I know the relationships of the neighbourhoods in the City by now, I don't wander around that side of the Uni much.

But, time for bed.  Ambitious museum plans tomorrow before the roast at the house!
